In the United States there are several thousand devices containing high-activity radiation sources licensed for use in areas ranging from medical uses such as cancer therapy to safety uses. Concerns have been raised about the safety and security of the radiation sources. Global Network for Environment and Economic Development Research (GNEEDER), an NGO, the Centre for Youth, Family and the Law, a community-based organisation, and the Sustainable Ibadan Project, a quasi-governmental organisation joined forces to find a solution to the problem of water pollution arising from the disposition of abattoir waste.
